Graffiti Philosophy

I have to say . . . I completely agree.

Kate and Pete

Along the same lines as my previous post is Russell Young’s re-working of the iconic mug-shots of the moors murderers.
It’s quite unsettling – and can’t be an image that Kate and Pete are thrilled with (not to suggest that they were consenting in its production.) Russell Young is a former music video director and photographer who kicked off his career shooting the record sleeve for George Michael’s ‘Faith’.
For my money – this image is a little bit of a cheap shot. Five minutes max on Photoshop. But then again – it will probably be an album cover the next time I see it!

Arresting Portraiture

Recognise any of these faces?

I recently came across these fascinating images of busted superstars (thank you Chase Jarvis.) His question was whether a ‘Mug shot’ is to be considered valid as a ‘Work of Art?’

Personally – I think if an image grabs your attention, makes you think and is held in your memory – then half the battle’s already won. In the case of these exquisite shots – I can easily imagine them hanging on a gallery wall.

Old Tree

Really missing those beautiful crisp shadows that summer light (normally) provides. I’m bored of the rain and the grey skies now.
Caught this incredible shadow a couple of months ago (surprisingly not in England!!) It seems to have a life and personality all of its own.

Remnants

A strange effect. But in the end . . . strangely appealing.

In the course of a recent shoot for Luxury brand Bambizi, a very pretty wall-sticker
that had just been shot was removed from its place on a wall.

The owner of the location loved the (unintentional) effect and has expressed a desire to keep it.

Beautiful. Unusual. Impossible to repeat. I love it.

Remodelista . . . Remodel Easter!

Recently I had a fun time shooting a lifestyle story for the hugely influencial style blog Remodelista.
On this occasion, the stylist in question was someone who is far better known as an Oscar winning actress. The theme was based around a family lunch to celebrate Easter and the beautiful, fresh, seasonal look was brought together by the stylist for the shoot – Gwyneth Paltrow.
Huge thanks go to Rose Uniacke for allowing us to use her beautiful shop in London as a location!

DecorMaison

While we’re on the subject of wallpaper – check out Swedish wallpaper manufacturers Decormaison. Not only are their designs beautifully rich, varied and unusual – but they are photographed and styled with real wit and creativity.

Trove

I recently came across these brilliant designs by New York – based Trove. Artists Randall Buck and Jee Levin launched their first collection of papers and wall-coverings back in 2006 & their work can be found in Nobu and The Smyth Hotel in New York.

A nice twist on a traditional format.

English Light

Recently, the light in London has been beautiful.

However, last week – I was chatting about our all-too-often ‘uninspiring’ weather with someone who lives both here and in Los Angeles. She says that the ‘greyness’ in London is what gets her down. I fought England’s corner with a short speech about the subtle, beautiful qualities of our misty, rainy weather.

I knew I was wrong – and so did she.

Here’s a bit of recent Provence to prove it . . .

TineK

Every now and then a catalogue drops into my lap that is so beautiful and inspiring that I almost feel jealous
that I wasn’t involved in its production. These images are beautifully textural and fresh. Congrats to Pernille Vest who styled the shoot. They come from TineK‘s Spring/Summer 2011 book.

Special thanks to my friend Emma Cassi for floating this in my direction.
